    What keeps you awake?

“there is something magical about 3:40am”, says Stacy R. “2-3 nights a week, I’ll wake up between 3:40 and 3:50am…and can’t go back to sleep, it’s exhausting to realize it has happened again.”   For me, 3:40 is just another work day, My alarm goes off every weekday morning at 3:45.  I then jump on Facebook to prepare for my 5:00am radio show.  But I see them every morning,  the insomniacs!

Now comes the confirmation, Louisville was just named The #1 Sleepless city in America, by Best Places to Live author Bert Sperling. This isn’t a surprise to folks who have been struggling to get a full 8 hours.  The study reports that  Louisville residents have trouble getting a restful night’s sleep,  1 out of every 9 days.  And it’s twice as likely to be women who can’t sleep.

I asked some Facebook friends, “what keeps you awake?” and accordingly it was a majority of women who responded.  There are easy to spot sleep stealers like The Sherman Minton Bridge Closure.   Cathie Wheat said:  “I think it may be because we have to get up at 4:00 am to get across the bridge to go to work on time!”  A report on CBS Sunday Morning this past weekend (featuring Louisville Legend Terry Meiners) said that the UPS WORLDPORT may add to it since so many people work the overnights.  High unemployment, and our higher than average divorce rate are also mentioned as possible causes for losing sleep.

But as I scroll through Facebook at 3:45am each morning, it seems to be more personal.  Shelia Q. says, “my aging bladder keeps me awake. ”  Donna J. simply wrote “too much stress”, and TJ said, “it’s because the bars stay open to 4am. ”

    What keeps you awake?

If you’re one of the people that struggle sleeping, you might try this “The most relaxing song in the world."

This song {Weightless} by Marconi Union just won the “relaxing” label from a group of scientists who measured a song’s effect on people.  {Weightless} induced a 65 per cent reduction in overall anxiety and brought test subjects resting pulse rates to a level 35 per cent lower than their usual resting rates.  This song was so relaxing that the researchers issued a warning, “it is not recommended to listen to this track while driving. ”  Enya and Mozart also made the list.  You can read the  story and see the TOP 10 Most Relaxing Songs here.

If that doesn’t help you could always try what Taevia Magee of Louisville said keeps her up at night “Flipping pancakes. ” ( yes it’s a euphemism)
