Ages: Sarah is 27. Steven is 28.

Occupations: Sarah is a physician assistant. Steven is a general contractor.

How they met: Growing up, they knew each other through multiple mutual friends but went to rival high schools — Sarah at duPont Manual, Steven at Male. It wasn’t until a holiday party in 2009 that they reconnected and kissed under mistletoe.

Engagement story: Throughout the course of their relationship, Steven and Sarah had always placed an emphasis on exercise and often ran the loop at Cherokee Park together. After Sarah moved to Lexington for graduate school, their time together was limited to weekend visits. One weekend, when Sarah was home in Louisville, she suggested they run their usual route at Cherokee together. Steven capitalized on this opportunity and snuck over to the park beforehand to write a message along the loop. As they rounded up the last half-mile of their run, the words ‘Sarah will you marry me?’ were written in sidewalk chalk, each word 20 yards apart.

    Number of wedding guests: 295

    Ceremony: St. Elizabeth of Hungary

    Reception: Whitehall House & Gardens

    Entertainment: HAY DJ Entertainment

First-dance song: “Wonderful,” My Morning Jacket

The day in three words: “Fun, unique, timeless.”

Favorite part of the day: The Vietnamese tea ceremony.

Really glad they: Hired a coordinator.

Wish they would have: Had a longer reception. Whitehall is restricted from having music past 10 p.m.

Advice: “The day flies by,” Sarah says. “Take a minute — or two — to soak up every moment of the day with your new partner.”
