The difficult realities of Great Depression-era Harlem are explored in Blues for an Alabama Sky, which opens at U of L on Wednesday.
Blues for An Alabama Sky performances will go on Feb. 1, 2, 3, and 4 at 8 p.m. each night. Matinee shows, meanwhile, will take place at 3 p.m. on Feb. 4 and 5. All performances are to happen at the Thrust Theatre on U of L's campus, located at 2314 S. Floyd Street. (Same intersection as the McDonalds)
Tickets for each show are $12 for general admission, $8 for students, and $8 for senior citizens. Tickets can be purchased at the U of L box office, at the door, or by calling the box office at 502-852-6814. More information on the show can also be found at the U of L theatre arts website. Keep in mind, the show contains adult subject matter and is not recommended for younger children.
Blues for an Alabama Sky looks at life in Harlem during the Great Depression. It focuses on a group of friends reaching for dreams despite the harsh climate and reality of the times. Pearl Cleage created the production, which Nerfertiti Burton director as part of the African American Theatre Program.
Following Blues, U of L's theatre arts department will present Atomic Bombers, an original play created by Russell Vandenbroucke. That show will take place from Feb. 29-March 4.
