Note: *Updated 4/12/11 (1:30pm) - App is now working on Android devices.

Right on the heels of Thunder Over Louisville, the Kentucky Derby Festival (KDF) has officially launched its new smartphone app for the 2011 festival. Derby Festival fans with a SmartPhone can download the new 2011 Derby Festival App from the iTunes Store or Droid Marketplace.

Customers will be able to personalize their KDF experience by clicking on their favorite events and adding them to a section called “My SuperFest.” Just go to that screen for a list of events that you’re interested in. The app allows users to locate and map the Festival events, as well as provides dates and time information for each event.  Photos and videos can also be uploaded.

“This app is a way for us to connect with Festival fans and get them the event information they need at their fingertips,” said Mike Berry, Kentucky Derby Festival President and CEO. “As a new SmartPhone user, myself, I’m learning how useful and convenient apps can be.  Now, if you need to find a Derby Festival event – there’s an app for that.”

The application was developed by the Festival’s advertising agency – CurrentMarketing, Inc.

**Update: The developers recently pushed out an update to the Android app and it is now functional. Excited to try out the new app and give it a test-drive via my DROID X smartphone, I downloaded the app from the Android Marketplace. The first thing I observed was the one-star rating (at the time this article was written all six reviewers gave the app one-star). I'm not quite sure if I'm doing something incorrectly, but in this case, I'll have to side with the six other reviewers. I couldn't get the app to do anything. Every button I pressed just brought me to a black screen.

Perhaps updates are in the near future. I can't speak for the iPhone app, but can say there are three, five-star reviews. Give it a go and let me know your thoughts in the comments.
