Carmichael's Bookstore will host a reading and discussion with journalist and author Kelsey Timmerman about his book Where Am I Wearing?: A Global Tour to the Countries, Factories, and People that Make Our Clothes on Thursday, February 19th at 7 PM at the Carmichael's Crescent Hill store at 2720 Frankfort Avenue.
This event is Carmichael's prelude to the Green Convene, a community wide event to be held February 20th and 21st that will bring together individuals, businesses, and nonprofit agencies to strategize on how to make Louisville a more sustainable and environmentally responsible city. Kelsey Timmerman's book began when he learned that 97% of Americans' clothes are made overseas. He read the tags on his own clothes, his mind wandered, and a quest was born. He decided to visit each of the countries and factories where his five favorite items of clothing were made and meet the workers who made them. His informative, unforgettable, never preachy book bridges the gap between impersonal economic forces of globalization and the people across the world who are most affected by them.
Time magazine called Where Am I Wearing? a "quixotic journey" and noted that Timmerman's "youthful exuberance carries this unlikely consumer tale." Timmerman is a freelance journalist and blogger who lives in Indianapolis. His work has appeared in The Christian Science Monitor and has aired on NPR. Where Am I Wearing? is his first book.
