Browsing the Komen store next to Subway in Oxmoor Center yesterday afternoon after picking up my very first race packet--which was ceremonious to me, but with less fanfare from the volunteers than I'd secretly hoped for--I stumbled across a gem for breastfeeding babies: a bib "Nursing for a Cure."

Why Komen hasn't jumped on prevention with its signature pink products for the cure for breastfeeding moms, I just don't know. But for those even further from the know, breastfeeding substantially decreases a woman's chances of developing breast cancer. In countries where breastfeeding is the norm, breast cancer is far more rare.

Because two women I love are recovering from mastectomy, I'm running in tomorrow's race for a cure. And, after I catch my breath, I'll be somewhere along the street in downtown Louisville nursing my baby for prevention.

If your nursing babe is a slobbery dude, pick up the bib. It's only $8! Or choose a gift for someone you know who's been touched by breast cancer. While you're there, register to lace up your sneakers and Race for the Cure this Saturday.
