    Exploring thousands of years using felt practically to the innovation of using felt decoratively, fiber artist Vallorie Henderson uses felt and other fine fabrics varying in texture and color piecing them together to portray their amazing light reflective qualities.  Using the Japanese technique of processing Merino wool through silk organza or crepe called Nuno felt, Ms. Henderson embodies the range of use for fibers from quilting to sculptural vessels.  This specific type of felting because it utilizes other fabrics for its construction forms one of a kind patterns and textures.  The finished Nuno felt is cut and pieced back together using a variety of traditional quilting patterns and new versions of old designs including American and Korean patchwork.  A current influence for Ms. Henderson is pojagi, a type of Korean patchwork traditionally made with the fibrous ramie cloth.  Pojagi, customarily utilized as wrapping cloth, is additionally passed down as heirlooms.  Recognized for its artistic construction and visual aesthetics pojagi also serves creative decorative functions for home interiors. 

    Kaviar Forge & Gallery presents fiber arts exhibition “An Empty Nest”, works by Vallorie Henderson, March 20 through May 30, 2009.  Implementing various influences and techniques while examining this new phase in her life artistically Henderson has created nests and basket-like vessels inspired by nature and her new status.  Venturing for the first time into three dimensional forms the recent addition of time afforded by her empty nest has given Vallorie the opportunity to develop new and complex levels to her work.

    Ms. Henderson received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Berea College and a Master of Fine Arts in Fiber from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio also completing extensive teaching residencies at the University of Kentucky and the University of Louisville.  With her start in Berea and their renowned work program for attending students, Vallorie can tout a long professional career in the arts with positions in arts administration and marketing after graduate school.  Having worked in several well known institutions in and around Kentucky such as the J.B. Speed Art Museum in Louisville, The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, and the Kentucky History Center in Frankfort, Ms. Henderson has also been a consistent instructor for the Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft.  In addition to being an accomplished visual artist, Ms. Henderson is the current Business Development Director for the Kentucky Arts Council.  In that position she assists Kentucky artisans in the marketing of their work at the Philadelphia Buyers Market of American Craft which takes place twice a year.

    Opening Reception for “An Empty Nest” will be held at Kaviar Gallery on Friday March 27, 2009 from 6 until 9 PM in conjunction with the FAT Friday trolley hop.  Musical entertainment will be provided by local bluegrass band the Potluck Ramblers.  Aaron Morris will present his spectacular fire breathing abilities outside Kaviar Gallery at 7 PM and again at 8 PM.  Music, fiber, and fire… it’s all here!  Join us for the festivities and refreshments.
