Not having a Derby party or heading to the track to see the races this Saturday? Then head out to celebrate Independent Bookstore Day this Saturday, May 2 from 9 a.m. - 9 p.m.

Louisville's two local independent bookstores, Carmichael's and A Reader's Corner, are both participating in the nationwide event. Independent bookstores across the country will be hosting celebrations, which originated in California earlier this year when nine regional bookseller associations collaborated together to launch it all across the U.S. Festivities will be book related, with entertainment, goodies, giveaways and literary-filled fun at both Louisville bookstores.

At Carmichael's, book lovers can enjoy the day's planned activities at all three of its locations. According to their website, "This year, the wildly successful California Bookstore Day will expand to include independent bookstores all over the country. Join us on Saturday, May 2nd to celebrate local bookstores and the readers (like you!) who shop here. We will have exclusive products (at all three stores) and all kinds of special activities and giveaways. Yes, we know it's Derby Day; we think it will add to the fun! We are throwing a day-long alternative Derby party with events and items going off all day (just like the track!) and fun activities for all ages.

As a special treat, Carmichael's has teamed up with Hound Dog Press and three other indie bookstores across Kentucky to offer you VERY LIMITED once-in-a-lifetime letterpressed KY lit items. Bookmarks featuring quotes by Wendell Berry, Silas House and the new Poet Laureate George Ella Lyon. These will be available for $2 each on IBD, with proceeds from the sales going to the Louisville Story Program. Additionally, we will have specially made posters to display a collection of all three bookmarks. On these posters ONLY the authors will sign under their quotes. The posters will be $35 with proceeds going to Louisville Story Program. Each store will only have ten posters so when they are gone they are really gone!"

    Carmichael's three locations are:
    2720 Frankfort Avenue
    1295 Bardstown Road
    1313 Bardstown Road
    502-896-6950

At A Reader's Corner Bookstore (2044 Frankfort Ave.), activities planned include 25% discounts on regularly priced purchases, and you can sign up for a drawing for a $25 gift certificate. They will also be serving refreshments. Call 502-897-5578 with any questions.

Enjoy some literary love and support our local bookstores this Derby Day!
