Creative thinking comes more naturally for some of us, but creative art making takes experience and a good teacher. Teenagers in grades 7-12 in the Louisville Metropolitan area under the guidance of their art teachers have been busy making art for a chance to win the prestigious Scholastic Gold Key Award. The Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, a nonprofit organization in New York, identifies as well as offers scholarships to teenagers with exceptional artistic and literary talent and brings their remarkable work to a national audience through The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. The Awards date back to 1923 and past winners such as Andy Warhol, Sylvia Plath and Truman Capote put these teens in very good company. Oh, where can I find a pic of young Andy’s winning work?
The 2012 Scholastic Art Award winners for the Louisville Metropolitan Region were selected in January and the 154 student Gold Key award-winning works of art and portfolios are on exhibit at the Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft until Saturday (Feb. 25). Entries were eligible from all public, private and parochial schools within thirteen surrounding counties.
Regional awards are in the following categories:
Gold Key: The highest level of achievement on the regional level. Approximately 7 – 10% of all regional submissions are recognized with Gold Key Awards and all are considered for national-level recognition.
Silver Key: Approximately 10 – 15% of all regional submissions are recognized with Silver Key Awards.
Honorable Mention: This Award recognizes students with artistic potential. Approximately 15 – 20% of all regional submissions receive Honorable Mention Awards.
American Visions & Voices Nominees: Five works are selected out of all Gold Key works (across categories) as the "Best of Show" for each region.
Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) is the Affliate coordinator and major sponsor of the Louisville Metropolitan Art Region Scholastic Art Awards and JCPS DuPont Manual High lives up to the hype of their stellar art program by winning a large margin of Gold Key’s this year.
These Gold Key winning students move on to the national level. Winners will be announced on March 15th. Good luck students.
