    Bit to Do

It’s Memorial Day weekend. The “official” start of summer. Personally, I’m ready for summer in some ways and in others not so much. I will say I’m looking forward to a cooler summer start. I really don’t function as well when my shirt sticks to my lower back from the Ohio Valley humidity. I wouldn’t mind if September rolled around and the humidity forgot to make its nasty presence. Then again, who wouldn’t?

Summer means many things when you have a child in elementary school: fun in the sun! My family is looking forward to the lazier days of summer. There are so many options for keeping your children entertained throughout the summer months. We have many items to check off from this bucket list of things to do in Louisville, getting all of our freebies for report card As, and checking out new spraygrounds that we haven’t been to yet.

But before summer can officially begin (as my child is a JCPS student and still has 7 days left of school), Memorial Day weekend is here to get you started. My family and I have attended the Kentucky Reggae Festival in the past and had a great time. Well, despite the year of the cicadas that were out in full force on the lawn of the Water Tower and our experience the following year when we sunbathed under the scorching heat…which is why 70 degree weather sounds perfect! Take part in some Jamaican food, flare, and music and shop the vendors who have hand-crafted, authentic art and memorabilia. Admission is $8 before 6pm; $11 afterwards. Kids 10 and under are free; parking is free as well.

Check out Louisville Family Fun’s list of things to do this Memorial Day weekend as well. There’s something for everyone around town this weekend. My family and I are hitting the Reggae Festival, but also spending time venturing around downtown at the free scavenger hunt, renting a surrey bike from Wheel Fun Rentals, and catching some dinner at Tumbleweed on the River. Try to catch a fly ball at a Louisville Bats baseball game: catch some fireworks after the games on Friday and Sunday nights and experience Meijer family day and Military Appreciation day on Monday, May 27. Or head to a Memorial Day service to honor our veterans for their dedicated service to America. There is one happening at Jeffersontown Veterans Memorial Park, observed on Sunday, May 26 from 6pm-8pm.                                Image courtesy of Kentucky Reggae Festival, Facebook
