There are a lot of things I love about Autumn – wearing hoodies, celebrating holidays, pretending to care about politics - but at the top of the list would have to be eating a big bowl of chili.
My wife will attest that my testosterone and manliness do not manifest themselves in the typical ways most of the time. I hate sports, know nothing about cars, and think kittens are kind of adorable.
But if I need to show my “man card” in a conversation (and without doing something that will both get me arrested and make my wife very angry), I typically turn the topic towards my love of a good bowl of red meat soup.
The fun thing about chili is not only that it is tasty – it’s versatile. I once judged a chili cook-off in a Hispanic neighborhood and found out just how flexible the term can be. Of a dozen sample bowls, not one looked similar to another and only two looked anything like what I would make at home.
So chili not only nourishes your physical appetite. It can also subdue your appetite for adventure.
All of that to say this – If you find yourself affectionate for that mixture of meat, tomato and pepper this weekend, the Peterson-Dumesnil House (301 S Peterson Ave) celebrates the second annual Chili Night Out Saturday from 6:30-9pm. The Crescent Hill Community Council invites the neighborhood to partake in the fun and will provide chili and soft drinks. The only admission is a side dish to share. Feel free to take along some adult beverages of your own if you feel so inclined, too.
