We talked recently about the magic of Paul Verhoeven, focusing specifically on a new take on Starship Troopers, that wonderfully terrible, terribly wonderful satire on extreme nationalism and the military. Today, we are heading back ten years to 1987: the year RoboCop was born. RoboCop is a landmark in the director's repertoire. He is Dutch and made several films in the Netherlands before coming to America in the 1980s. RoboCop is the film that brought him into the light in our country (his previous, Flesh and Blood, doesn't get talked about much) and also was the start of his science-fiction career, which would later spawn into Total Recall, Starship Troopers, and Hollow Man, the films for which he is perhaps best known.
RoboCop stars Peter Weller as the title character, a cop in crime-infested Detroit who is viciously murdered, but brought back as a cyborg – the ultimate crime-fighting machine.
Tomorrow – Friday – Baxter Avenue Theaters presents a very special midnight screening of RoboCop. It is Verhoeven's cult classic revamped, for Ultra Pulverize, the local “futuristic electronic synth-punk rap three piece” group has totally re-scored the film – and they will be performing the new soundtrack live and straight to your earholes. The group was “deeply inspired” by the film as kids, and this is their tribute.
Admission to the show is $10. This is a performance not to be missed: the group does not currently plan to do this in Louisville again, and they have no plans to release their score on CD. This may be literally a once in a lifetime opportunity.
