Several basic human desires:
- To learn. Whether for straight-up pleasure or intellectual gain, most of us desire to learn. Knowledge is brain fuel.
- To have a say, and further, have our voices heard. Represented, responded to. Communication allows for creativity and justice + community.
- To be surprised. Not the ole pop-out-the-bushes-pee-your-pants sorta thing, but surprises as mind fresheners. The occasional twist on the everyday. These make us pay attention. This makes us think.
There are more, of course, -- food, sleep, shelter, blah, yah, yah -- but the three above are prime in Follow the Geeks, a new book about 10 hard-working innovators nationwide who are harnessing the power of the digital age to create new kinds of careers. It’s a book about entrepreneurship. What’s working, what’s not. How to succeed in the new-age digital world.
Follow the Geeks is experimental in nature. Co-authored by Jason Hiner and Lyndsey Gilpin, both of TechRepublic at CBS Interactive and lovers of long-form nonfiction, the book is a rule-bender to the traditional publishing format. Accessed via web, Geeks will be released serially, meaning chapter-by-chapter, starting in early 2015.
This format allows for learning, surprise, suspense, and, more importantly, a conversation. As chapters are released, each on an individual innovator, readers are able to give feedback, comment, and join in a community of other folks interested in this topic. The work is ever-evolving to reflect the ever-changing world.
