The Floyd Theater presents 'Much Ado About Nothing' and 'Fast and Furious 6'

Normally, I like to do my little introduction, but I have so much I could say about both of today's topics, so let's just jump right into it, shall we? We are gathered today to discuss the week's offerings at the University of Louisville Floyd Theater, and this week is a little exciting.

First: geeks rejoice! Joss Whedon is a force of nature in the annals of modern pop culture, with an extremely devoted fan base of which I unwittingly became a part several years ago when a friend forced me to watch Buffy the Vampire Slayer against my better judgment, and, dammit, I ended up loving the thing, along with its spin-off Angel. At this point I was hooked, and next came Firefly and Dollhouse (which could have been so great had it not been canceled so prematurely). Whedon is an auteur, and he had a fantastic idea on how to utilize his distinctiveness: by gathering his friends and regular collaborators to his house to make some modern Shakespeare. The result: Much Ado About Nothing. The best word to describe this film is “delightful.” Alexis Denisof stars as Leonato, who scoffs at the idea of love. He has a particular beef with Beatrice (Amy Acker), and so their friends decide it would be a fantastic joke to trick them into falling in love with each other, all amidst other romantic entanglements, conspiracies, and comedic monologues. Much Ado About Nothing screens tonight, Thursday, at 5:00 and 8:00.

Next: Fast and Furious 6, and this is special to me because it was the subject of an experiment I conducted but unfortunately cannot expound upon here. After viewing the trailer, I decided I needed to see the film under a particular set of circumstances – but first, I needed to watch the first five, which had previously not interested me. Let's just say the experiment was a success, and has since expanded to include Man of Steel, Pacific Rim (I was disappointed), and White House Down (a spectacular mess – recommended). Anyway, in this, the sixth in the serious, Dominic, Brian, and the gang are happily retired after the successful heist of the fifth film – until Hobbs shows up with some interesting information: Letty, Dominic's girlfriend presumed dead, is, in fact, alive, and running with a rival crew who Hobbs needs help taking down. A whole lot of car-related violence and unaddressed civilian death follows. Fast and Furious 6 will play Friday and Saturday at 5:00 and 8:00.

The Floyd Theater is located on the third floor of the Student Activities Center on the U of L campus. Further information can be found at the SAB Film Committee Facebook page.

    About Allan Day

There are legitimate theories that the Big Bang originated from the collapse of a black hole in a fourth-dimensional universe. This stuff fascinates me, and I love reading about it. I love reading about science. And about anything, for that matter, provided it's interesting - and everything is potentially interesting, so I'm fascinated by a lot of things. I also read a lot of fiction (Kurt Vonnegut deserves deification) and watch a lot of movies (Charlie Chaplin also deserves deification). I've made a few short films myself. I'm also a writer of everything - I'm close to a Bachelor's in English at IUS. My life consists of reading, writing, bartending, and taking care of my daughter full-time. Life is busy and life is stressful, but that's why there's music and art and other forms of relaxation.
