The plants currently growing on the stage of Floyd Central H.S. auditorium aren’t exactly of the household variety. The campy musical comedy, “Little Shop of Horrors” will kick off the main stage series at the school October 10, 11, 12, 17, 18 &19th. The production is being staged by the school’s musical theatre class and is sure to add a bit of fun to the fall and Halloween season.
“Little Shop” evolves around the story of a down-and-out skid row floral assistant who becomes an overnight sensation when he discovers an exotic plant with a mysterious craving for fresh blood. Soon “Audrey 11” grows into an ill-tempered, rhythm and blues singing carnivore who offers him fame and fortune in exchange for feeding its growing appetite, finally revealing itself to be an alien creature poised for global domination. One of the longest running Off-Broadway shows of all time, this affectionate spoof of 1950’s sci-fi movies has become a household name, thanks to a highly successful film version and a score by the songwriting team of Howard Ashman and Alan Menken, who redefined the animated musical film with Disney’s “The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin.” Charming, tuneful and hilarious, with tongue firmly planted in cheek, “Little Shop of Horrors” never fails to entertain.
Tickets for the production are $12 adults; $10 for senior citizens and $6 for students. Although there is no reserved seating for the show, those who do reserve in advance will get first choice of a special preferred seating section in the center.
