On Friday's, we don't eat meat. Okay so I kinda copied Mean Girls on that quote. But seriously, if you're Catholic, you know that Ash Wednesday started the Lenten season. 40 days of "sacrificing" something, or going without. Most people do this as a time to lose weight before spring break, usually you hear "I'm giving up candy" or cokes or anything else that they feel would be difficult to give up, and every Friday for the next 40 days, you cannot eat meat.
"Abstinence The law of abstinence requires a Catholic 14 years of age until death to abstain from eating meat on Fridays in honor of the Passion of Jesus on Good Friday. Meat is considered to be the flesh and organs of mammals and fowl. Also forbidden are soups or gravies made from them. Salt and freshwater species of fish, amphibians, reptiles and shellfish are permitted, as are animal derived products such as margarine and gelatin which do not have any meat taste."(from Catholic.org)
So that leaves you with Fish and cheese pizza. Unless your a vegetarian in which case you have about a million more options, but those two are the only two I can currently think of. Which is pretty much what a lot of grade school parishes serve. My home parish is Our Lady of Lourdes, located on Breckenridge Lane. Every Friday during Lent you can find me up there! Doors open at 5:30 and runs until 8:30. For the kiddos they have themed each Friday night, to give them something fun to do. For example, tonight is Carnival night, $5 and the kiddos get to play all night.
It's a perfect way to get to know your fellow parish members as well as a great reminder to not eat meat on Friday!
