The idea of the immensity of the universe is truly amazing and humbling. When once mankind considered our planet to be the center of everything, now we know that we are but a tiny speck in our galaxy, which is itself a speck within the context of the thousands and thousands of other galaxies in the universe. It is enough to make one incredibly nihilistic.
Tonight, evolutionary philosopher Brian Swimme presents his documentary “Journey of the Universe,” which explores the human connection to the universe. Brian Swimme currently teaches evolutionary cosmology at the California Institute of Integral Studies. The film was co-created with Mary Evelyn Tucker, who is a religious historian on the faculty of Yale University.
A post-screening discussion will be hosted by Mark Steiner and Marilyn Stoner of Cultivating Connections, a “grassroots, nonprofit contributing to the creation of a just and sustainable community by nurturing and celebrating our connections with each other and with our world.” They have both previously worked with Brian Swimme, and so will be able to bring an insider’s context to the discussion. A companion book will also be available at the screening.
For those who can’t make it to tonight’s screening, or who wish to see it again, a second screening will be held on Tuesday, January 24th. In addition to the film screenings, a study group will be held on the second and fourth Tuesdays of every month, starting February 14, for those who wish to more thoroughly explore the ideas presented.
