If the first five tracks on a band’s debut EP are over five minutes long, would you get bored? Probably, right? But not so fast, my friend. With Ed Monk’s (which is a band, not a guy) debut EP, the audience hardly loses touch of the song.
The interplay of two guitars feels very fresh, and after that seems to reach its limit, a great synth beat comes in.
While some of the tracks play supporting roles, you’ll find the best of this EP in back-to-back tracks “Pages in the Sun” and “Movements.” The solos reach anthemic proportions, and the riffs (like the art for “Pages in the Sun”) harken to a drive with the top down. They have a Los Angeles feel.
About half the songs on the seven track EP end with a funky, atmospheric soundscape that they could have done without. It delays the powerful, guitar-driven momentum from song to song.
Ed Monk’s next performance is at Mag Bar on June 14. You can check them out opening for Kyowa, a grim pop band from Nashville. Admission is $5.
Ed Monk had previously released a single called "I Was Young" which you can find here.
