    Bit to Do

Every so often, nature will bring in a scent so perfect you know it can't be recreated, whether it's a fresh blossoming of honeysuckle or the crisp fall air. You may have even browsed the candle selections available at stores and were disappointed when a rain scented candle had an inexplicable chemical smell. While it is true there is no substitute for experiencing the fresh aromas of nature firsthand, Earth Goddess Candles warm the hearth with clean-smelling, natural soy candles.

Valerie Timmons, the founder of Earth Goddess Candles, an artist, and an instructor at Bellarmine University, carefully combines fragrance oils to provide homes with unique candle scents not obtainable in traditional outlets. She started making her own candles about three years ago when she couldn't find the scents she wanted in stores. Some of her original distinct fragrances include: pear and white tea, rosemary with lemon and vanilla, and lavender and cucumber.

Earth Goddess Candles are made from soy wax, as it is a biodegradable, renewable, clean alternative to traditional paraffin waxes. The candles are hand-poured, dye-free, and the wicks are metal-free. All containers are recyclable and reusable. There are instructions here on how to get the wax tab out of the container easily. Even the packing peanuts Timmons uses are recyclable.

Timmons added the Kentucky Home fragrances a few months after she founded Earth Goddess Candles. These scents honor Kentucky; some evoke the aromas of rain or fall, while others bring to mind distinctly Kentucky experiences like bourbon balls and mint juleps. Earth Goddess Candles also feature the botanical lines of Floral Essences and EG Exotics as well as a line called Interlude based on characters and settings in several famous operas.

Earth Goddess Candles can create signature fragrances for weddings or other special events. You can select your fragrance notes and the container type and size, so the combinations are practically limitless.

Earth Goddess Candles are available online or at Craft(s) Gallery on South Fourth Street between the Brown and Seelbach hotels. Craft(s) Gallery has a wide array of artisan crafts by Kentucky artists, and not only will you be able to smell the candles in person, but they also use them in the store. The Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea carries the Kentucky Home line.

    About Rebecca Ball

As great lover of books and adventure, I grew up wanting to be anywhere else. I satiated some my wanderlust in the castles and expansive forests in Europe over the past few years. Now, I live in the city that will always be home with a cat who thinks she's a person.
