    Project: Family Room

The owners of this 12-year-old home in Floyds Knobs were ready for a totally new look when they hired Victor Saho to redecorate their home. Taking a cue from today’s relaxed styles, he transformed the family’s favorite hangout from staid neoclassical to much more livable — but still highly sophisticated — soft contemporary.

“One of the secrets of soft contemporary is a monochromatic color scheme. My client wanted a creamy look to match the travertine floors in the adjoining salon and foyer, so I chose textured oatmeal wool carpet for the floor. The walls are painted with Benjamin Moore’s Deer Path.”

“Contemporary focuses on geometric shapes — circles, squares and rectangles. Lamps as well as the Barbara Barry wood table between the lounge chairs add some much-needed rounds to the room.”

“My clients love natural light and their panoramic view of New Albanyand downtown Louisville. So for the window treatments, I used Hunter Douglas Alouette LightLouvers. Made from fabric, they’re dressier than regular blinds and leave the view virtually unobstructed.”

“On one wall, I carried in the silver-overlaid Lanark Lacquer wallpaper from the foyer to create a natural flow between the rooms. Playing off the paper are two faux silver-tinted console tables with dark Hamiltonbronze floats from Jerry Pair and a very contemporary metal-and-glass coffee table from Terry G.”

“Mirrors are an important element in soft contemporary decor. Mirroring the arch above the fireplace updated the built-in entertainment center. A spectacular mirrored chest — also from Terry G — provides storage, but functions as a piece of art.”

“A silver sculpture on the coffee table is filled with chunks of cracked glass. Centered on the console behind the sofa is a piece of handblown amber glass. Simple but towering Baker candlesticks are positioned to show off the original art hanging above the mirrored chest.”
