    Project:
    Galley Kitchen Renovation

Inspired by the homeowners’ collection of 1950s vintage furniture and Murano glass, Nix coupled curvaceous countertops and cabinet doors with Crayola colors to create a smashing new kitchen in this Gardiner Lane-area ranch.

“The original fluorescent ceiling fixtures were replaced with recessed cans. Above the counters, xenon lights provide bright task lighting without the heat of halogen. Ten-watt halogen lights mounted in each shelf of the corner display case make the homeowners’ glass collection sparkle.”

“For the countertops, I used Pacific Blue Caesarstone and curved the edges. Curves are repeated in the cabinet valance over the window and in the rounded display case.”
“A Murano glass chandelier in the dining room inspired the four accent colors: blue, green, red and yellow. The colors are picked up in two-inch-square Italian glass tiles in the backsplash and in the scroll-door, glass-front cabinets. The brightly colored glass is actually plastic sheeting. A layer of clear glass applied over it prevents scratches.”

“Hollyberry-colored laminate strips above the cabinets and on the toe kick add another splash of color. In keeping with the kitchen’s modern design, I used inconspicuous bracket pulls rather than handles or knobs.”

“Eighteen-inch-square marble-look porcelain tile replaced the vinyl floor. The off-white shade makes the floor recede, blends with the hardwood in the living room and is easier to maintain than bright white.”
