     When Derby time rolls around, the food and the spirits run in large portions. To help you out with your Derby party favors and treats, check out some of these great traditions that bring smiles to the faces of all your guests.

    Kentucky Mint Julep

    Syrup
    *1/4 cupFresh mint leaves
    *2 cupsWater, heated
    *2 cupsSugar
    Heat water. Whisk in sugar. Remove from heat. Add mint & allow to steep for at least 20 minutes.

    Add cracked ice to glass. Add 1 1/2 oz Bourbon. Add 2 1/2 teaspoons syrup. Stir lightly. Garnish with fresh mint leaf. Traditionaly served with two short straws.

    Kentucky Derby Pie

    3 eggs, lightly beaten
    1 c. light corn syrup
    1/2 c. brown sugar, packed
    1 c. chopped pecans
    1/4 t. salt
    1/2 t. vanilla
    6 oz. package semi-sweet chocolate morsels
    1 9 inch deep dish pie shell, unbaked

    Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Mix all ingrediaents and pour into pie shell. Bake for 10 minutes and reduce heat to 350 degrees for 35 minutes more. Serve with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.

    Bourbon Balls
    1 stick butter
    1 box powdered sugar
    1 cup chopped pecans
    4 T. Bourbon
    1 large package semi-sweet chocolate chips
    1 T. paraffin wax

    Cream butter and sugar then add chopped pecans. Mix well and add in the Bourbon. Chill for an hour to make it easier to handle then roll into small balls. Refrigerate overnight.

    Melt the chocolate and paraffin in a double boiler until smooth and well mixed. Dip the chilled Bourbon balls into the chocolate and place on a cookie sheet lined with waxed paper. Chill until hard.
