Bringing together both fashion and breast cancer awareness, the Derby Divas is the brainchild of Sabrina Hackett.  While the celebration of shoes and hats certainly goes hand in hand with the Kentucky Derby, bringing hope and awareness to the more important cause of breast cancer is the main drive of these “Divas.”

On Thursday, April 17th, the Derby Divas will be hosting an event at Rodes For Him and Her (4938 Brownsboro Road) at 6:30pm for Roll For A Cure.  Ten percent of sales will be donated to the Norton Healthcare Foundation to support Norton Cancer Institute and the Norton Breast Health Program.

    1.  What is the background of the Derby Divas?

Even though Sabrina Rosenbaum Hackett moved away from her hometown of Louisville after college, she has returned every year to att/files/storyimages/the Kentucky Oaks or the Derby with the same group of high school girlfriends for over 30 years. Sabrina used to create homemade Derby games to play at Derby parties, and dreamed of producing and selling a game one day. But she didn't know where to begin, so each year the game was boxed up and stored in the back of a closet.

Sabrina’s dream became a reality on April 8, 2005, the day she attended a Memorial Service held at the Kentucky Derby Museum for a girlfri/files/storyimages/who had lost her 10-year fight against breast cancer. Dr. Kathy Seibert-Miller, a Louisville dentist, owned horses and she loved going to the Derby...she also loved wearing fashionable hats and buying new shoes....and she was passionate about helping to raise awareness around town for breast cancer research.

The game is dedicated to Kathy, and it was created it to honor the spirit of women everywhere who have fought to survive breast cancer, including Sabrina’s mother, Shirley Stinnett. Shirley is a 5-time, 22-year survivor, who amazes and inspires everyone who knows her.  The new types of treatments that Shirley has received throughout the years prove that every dollar raised for cancer research does make a difference.

    2.  Outside of the benefit at Rodes, tell us about some other things your group has going on year-round.  Can anyone att/files/storyimages/the events?

This is the second year to have Rodes For Her host a Derby Divas event to benefit Norton Healthcare's Breast Health Program. Invitations have been mailed to Rodes customers, and an ad can be found in this month's Underwired Magazine.

In years past, there have been similar events held in Atlanta and Louisville during October (Breast Cancer Awareness month). Derby Divas welcomes any fundraising group that benefits breast cancer research to contact them about hosting a "Roll For A Cure" themed event this coming October.

    3.  How can people get involved in helping the cause with Derby Divas?

Through their Roll For A CureTM program, Derby Divas donates a portion of the proceeds to breast cancer research. Everyone can help their cause by purchasing a game and other merchandise (caps, shirts and backpacks) at Rodes For Her during April, or anytime online at derbydivas.com and by sharing this cause with friends and family.

    4. On your website, it mentions a dice game; tell us about that and what it means?

The game is designed for “fillies of all ages” and is packaged in a custom hat box, equipped for up to 8 players, 2 tables of 4. The board looks like a racetrack and there are colorful horses that move around the board to the finish line. Each player draws a card to determine their horse color. Then, they roll their dice to determine how their horses move ahead on the track. Everyone starts out with a bag of pink chips and depending on what happens on each roll of the dice or the spot their horse lands on, they either win or lose chips.

Each race only takes 5-7 minutes so it’s a quick game. The player crossing the finish line first is the winner, and the next player PLACES, the next one SHOWS.  After each race, the players get up and move to other tables -- just like Bunco -- so everyone gets to visit with other girlfriends when they move around.

It is suggested that guests wear their most fashionable outfits topped with a Derby-style hat. The game comes with a sound chip that plays the bugle call and a pink boa — so even the young girls want to be in on the fun. There have been 8-year-old birthday parties held with a Derby Divas them, as well as college sororities joining in on the fun. So it really is fun for “fillies” of all ages!

    5.  What is the message of the Derby Divas?

There were some special words spoken at Kathy's service that gave Sabrina the inspiration to pursue her dream.

“Whenever you buy a new pair of shoes, figuratively or literally ... step out in style with Kathy’s determined positive spirit ... and do something good for someone.”

Derby Divas message is.......Celebrate Life, Embrace Friendship, and Roll For A Cure with Derby Divas!
