May is National Bike Month, and Louisville is participating with a Bike to Work Day celebration at 4th Street Live.
The Bike Louisville program is looking to sign up 800 riders, increasing its participation from last year's 600, on National Bike to Work Day, Friday, May 21st, and registration is happening now. But, don't think you need to wait until next Friday to bike your commute. All next week, May 17-21st is Bike to work Week!
The next Meet & Ride practice event will take place Friday, May 14 at 7:00 a.m. so Louisville bikers, or wannabes, can meet other bikers in their neighborhoods, and get comfortable with a bike commute.
Then, Meet & Ride on Bike to Work Day, Friday, May 21 at 7 a.m.
Meet & Ride Locations:
Seneca Park - Meet at the basketball court parking lot, west of the tennis courts. Ride downtown to 4th Street Live.
Iroquois Park - Meet at the Amphitheater parking lot. Ride downtown to 4th Street Live.
Shawnee Park - Meet at the Southwestern and Broadway entrance. Ride downtown to 4th Street Live.
Each location has parking for those who plan to park and ride. Riders must have helmets to wear on the commute.
This year's Bike to Work Day in Louisville includes a Commuter Challenge in which organizations and form teams and compete against each other for prizes. And, throughout May, Bicycling for Louisville and Louisville Bicycle Club will offer free safety classes to teach riders how to be confident and increase safety riding around town.
Bike to Work Day Celebration at 4th Street Live on Friday, May 21
Beginning at Noon on May 21st, meet up with other commuters, learn more about bicycle commuting, visit with vendors and win prizes, including a new Trek 7000 commuting bike, with packs and racks, no purchase necessary.
To encourage riders to leave their cars behind, Heine Brothers' Coffee and Java Brewing Company locations will give you a free cup of coffee if you're headed to work on your bike on Friday, May 21st.
Bike to Work Week is a great opportunity to pause your gasoline habit, but if you're thinking of participating in Bike to Work Day at 4th Street Live, it may behoove you to Bike a Vacation Day, or at least a long lunch.
