The Carnegie Center for Art and History and Community Alliances to Promote Education (CAPE), with funding support from the Community Foundation of Southern Indiana, are pleased to announce the opening of a unique exhibition titled The Art of Reading. This exhibit offers a rare opportunity to combine the efforts of arts and literacy advocates in our community to actively engage the public in activities that immerse them in the world of art while promoting awareness of literacy and language development and strengthening the literacy skills of our children.  The Art of Reading will increase public awareness of the importance of reading, further the understanding of how art positively influences our lives through the conveyance of messages, and emphasize the role adults play in supporting children’s literacy development.  This exhibition and activities are made possible through the generosity of The Community Foundation of Southern Indiana, PNC Foundation, The Carnegie Center, Inc., The Community Alliance to Promote Education (CAPE), Morris Images, Destinations Booksellers, and Idealogy Design and Advertising.

The exhibit features works by 13 artists promoting the theme of family literacy in a variety of 2-D media from oil on canvas to digital illustration.  The artists featured in the exhibit are Annette Cable, Mike Covington, Sarah Hall, Claudia Hammer, Allen Howie, Wes Kendall, Joe Lee, Sharon Matisoff, Joseph McGee, Christie Morris, Marguerite Rice, Zach Stewart, and Bryan Warren

There will be an opening reception for this exhibit on Friday, March 7 from 6-8 pm.  Visitors can meet the artists and enjoy refreshments and live jazz from the Jamey Aebersold Jazz Quartet.  The reception is free, open to the public and sponsored by the Carnegie Center, Inc.

The Carnegie Center will be offering a variety of family programs in conjunction with this exhibit.  Please note those programs that require registration.

Visit the “Storybook Castle” throughout the run of the exhibition.  Children can create their own works of art to hang in the gallery, make their own “Book Mark,” write and illustrate a book, or just snuggle in and read a book in the cozy reading area provided by Destinations Booksellers. Each child will also receive a free, age-appropriate book provided by the PNC Foundation.

Admission is free.  Visit www.carnegiecenter.org for more information on exhibits, events, and classes.
