Mike Rutherford, better known to many University of Louisville sports fans as Card Chronicle, started a little blog in 2006 in his spare time. In the nine years since, this blog, which eventually was picked up by national sports website SB Nation, became the place to find UofL sports news and notes.
Nearly every Division I team has a person that holds this identity. This person can be the #1 fan, the face of the fans, and the spokesperson for the team’s community. Rutherford has achieved this status and today he announced he is entering the end-all be-all medium for local sports: talk radio.
Before the announcement today you could hear Rutherford on Tuesday evenings on ESPN Radio 680 as a part of the Two Man Game. Now you will be able to hear him Monday through Friday from 3-6 p.m. with co-host John Ramsey on 93.9 The Ville. The first show is Tuesday, May 26.
Through a post on his website, Rutherford said, “Our show will be centered around Louisville sports, it will be hosted by two guys who are unabashed Cardinal fans, and we will have maximal access to the biggest names with the program.”
He goes on to say that his hope for the show is to eventually be caller driven. He asks callers not to hold back from calling because they think their opinion will be rolled over or ridiculed. “I want to bring the fun stuff we talk about here at Card Chronicle onto the radio, I want people who don't ordinary call into sports talk shows to feel like they can, and I want people to be able to follow along with the program here on the site,” Rutherford said.
He confirmed that the show will be posted in the form of a podcast and there will be conversational message threads for the show.
This addition to UofL media gives a possible comparable audio meeting place for UofL fans to Kentucky Sports Radio, the go to radio show for University of Kentucky sports. Matt Jones, the host of the program which airs from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Talk Radio 1080 AM, has garnered national attention and over 140,000 Twitter followers for the UK based sports show.
I’m sure we will live in this happy reality where we all get along on the radio, but this is UofL-UK and this is sports radio. It is only a matter of time, right?
Regardless of what the future holds for Louisville sports radio, Rutherford notes as he closes his announcement post, “This all should be lots of fun.”
