Remember the scene in Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory when Augustus Gloop drinks from the chocolate river, falls in and gets sucked away? It’s OK to admit that you were a tiny bit jealous of Augustus despite his short-lived indulgence and sad fate.
Lucky for us, a new sweets shop in the form of COCO’S CHOCOLATE CAFE (1759 Bardstown Road, 454-9810) came to town this past spring. Coco’s offers fresh, house-made candies sporting names like Exotique (white chocolate infused with passion fruit and mango) and Sweet Mother (dark chocolate with a dark chocolate and raspberry center), both $2.25 per yummy piece. The rosy pink Crema de la Frambuesa ($2) also caught my eye; one bite through its white-chocolate shell produced a mouth-watering explosion of raspberry cream.
Coco’s isn’t just about candy. Specialty drinks and desserts, and combinations of the two, abound. My fri/files/storyimages/and I shared a fondue combination ($12, plus $3.50 for specialty drinks). A bowl of creamy milk chocolate fondue (also available in dark chocolate) arrived with slices of pound cake, strawberries and Rice Krispy treats for dipping. We saved the dark chocolate for our mochas, which were topped with whipped cream and chocolate shavings and lacked the bitter aftertaste commonly found at other locations offering this espresso drink.
Coco’s comfy banquettes and basket seats encourage lingering, as does the enticing menu. It’s a chocoholic’s dream.
