More than 100 Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) and Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) soldiers and their family members are expected to gather at Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom on Saturday July 25 for a day of celebration. The Louisville VA Medical Center is hosting their third annual "Welcome Home Event" for OEF/OIF veterans who have recently returned home. This year, the VA is partnering with the Kentucky Army National Guard, the Mighty 223rd Military Police Unit who returned home in February 2009 from Baghdad. The event is designed to honor and recognize the service and sacrifices of our nation’s newest heroes.
“At the VA, we can say with certainty and pride that we are here to serve those who have selflessly given of themselves to serve a greater purpose,” said VA Medical Center Director Wayne Pfeffer. “We are looking forward to a fun Welcome Home Event and are proud to have the opportunity to thank our Veterans for their service.”
A program will be held at 11:00am in the Picnic Grove area at Six Flags followed by a day of fun in the sun at the park. Highlights scheduled for the event include:
• Remarks by Wayne Pfeffer, VA Medical Center Director
• Remarks by Charles Hill, Captain of the 223rd
• Certificates of Appreciation for each soldier in attendance
Resource booths providing information on VA healthcare services, benefits, and other veterans assistance programs will also be available on site.
