Boney James Coming to Louisville Palace

    George Dwight

The historic Louisville Palace has hosted some of the biggest names in the entertainment industry for decades, from Diana Ross to Robin Williams. On Sunday, June 23, Boney Williams is scheduled to use the historic venue at 625 S. Fourth Street to entertain Louisvillians with his iconic instrumentals.

The Lowell, Massachusetts-native, born James Oppenheim, is a saxophonist, songwriter, and producer. James is one of the most prominent and successful instrumental artists today. His career as a saxophonist has spawned 14 albums with more than 3 million in sales.

James became a fan of Motown music in his early teen years when living in New Rochelle, New York. Saxophonist Grover Washington, Jr. is also known as one of James’ musical influences.  At 14 years-old, James and his family moved to California. In L.A., he joined a fusion band that garnered success opening for acts like Flora Purim (the “Queen of Brazilian Jazz”) and The Yellowjackets.

At UCLA, James received a History degree, but played music full-time post-graduation. Seven years of touring and recording sessions with the likes of Day, the Isley Brothers, Bobby Caldwell, and Teena Marie further strengthened James’ R&B influence. His debut album, Trust, was released in 1992. Trust’s success led to the major Warner Brothers signing James in 1994. In 1986, while on the road with Randy Crawford, James earned his now-famous name when keyboardist Wayne Linsey (The Tonight Show) joked about James’ dwindling physique, saying, "We'll have to start calling you Boney James!"

Since James’ signing with Warner Brothers, he has consistently released critically-acclaimed albums with no more than 3 years between releases. Many of his releases have done well on Billboard charts and further instilled James’ name in the music industry. Artists who have made guest appearances on James’ records include George Benson, Philip Bailey, Jaheim, Eric Benet, Dave Hollister, Donnell Jones, Mario, LeToya Luckett, Heather Headley, Dwele, and Angie Stone.

James is promoting his current release, The Beat, and is set to perform at Louisville Palace Sunday, June 23, 2013 at 7:30. Ticket price are from $29.50 to $49.50. Visit louisvillepalace.com for more information.
