This trick works best for kids who, upon watching a movie, earnestly ask questions like: Is Moana real? Are lions really kings? Why don’t Elsa and Anna need coats? It’s an age ripe with curiosity, and one that’s exquisitely easy to fool. Adorable schmucks. And, man, can they make meals a battle, particularly if vegetables are involved, especially if said vegetables are leafy greens. Lucky for me, Bean, my neighborhood coffee shop, offers a pineapple-kale smoothie. My abbreviation: “the pineapple smoothie.” All my two young children know is that the delightfully bright-green drink is citrusy-sweet, cold and refreshing. But I’m tall enough to see over the counter. So I get to witness the act of a barista mashing a fistful of kale into a blender. Vitamins A to Z will enter their tiny systems. Victory is mine!
