El Molcajete won a 2018 Critic's Choice award in the 2018 Best of Louisville awards.

A weathered charcoal grill sits on the sidewalk outside El Molcajete, a taqueria near Churchill Downs that serves up authentic Mexican fare. The fresh tacos are packed with meat hot off the grill and topped with radishes, diced onions and cilantro. But it’s the salsa I really crave. (And I do mean crave, as I’ve been known to arrive before the doors open at 10 a.m.)

The poblano-based salsa is brown in color and rather thin, but don’t let its appearance deter you. The smoky concoction is served warm with onions and cilantro. The house-made chips are perfectly crispy, but they’re really just a means to shovel a salsa so good it’s been known to result in thrown elbows as the bowl gets low. Runner-up in the condiment category at El Molcajete is a creamy green sauce made with avocado and jalapeños. It’s the perfect accompaniment to carnitas, chicken, chorizo or any other main course — assuming you don’t fill up on chips and salsa.
