Reliever Jon Adkins, who has struggled since his return to the Louisville Bats, has been released by the team.

That despite the fact that he leads the team with 10 saves and earlier this month became the franchise's all-time leader in that category.

Adkins was an International League All-Star in 2008 when he recorded 30 saves in 33 save opportunities and also appeared in four games with the parent Cincinnati Reds. He spent 2009 in the Korean Baseball Organization before returning to Louisville. And although at the Triple-A All-Star break he led the team in saves he had a 1-4 record with five blown saves and a 5.46 earned-run average. He had given up 39 hits and 19 earned runs in 31 1/3 innings and had lost his duties as the team's primary closer.

"We just didn't see him having a significant role in the second half of the season," Reds farm director Terry Reynolds told The Courier-Journal. "I will tell you the same thing I told him. He's a quality person. At some point when he feels the time is right, he will be a great coach. He's been a true professional. He handled it with great dignity."

Adkins, who'll turn 33 on Aug. 30, has 52 saves in his minor league career and 3-2 record in the major leagues.

With Adkins out look for Louisville's closing duties to be handled by Carlos Fisher, who has taken over that role recently. With Enerio Del Rosario, Phillippe Valiquette also able to fill in.

In other Bats' roster news outfielder Luis Terrero was assigned to Double-A Carolina. He went 1-for-5 with a home run and two RBIs in his first game with the Mudcats on Wednesday night.
