The Louisville Bats could only muster five hits a night after losing a game in which they led by three runs. The Bats never led Wednesday night and were down 4-0 after a big fifth inning from the Rochester Red Wings.

Rene Tosoni led off the Red Wings’ fifth with a walk and later scored on a single from Pedro Florimon. The next batter, Wilikin Ramirez, ripped a 2-RBI double to left to make it 4-0. All three Red Wings runs scored with two outs.

For the 28th time this season, the Bats’ opponent scored first. The Red Wings struck in the very first inning when Ben Revere scored on a throwing error by Bats catcher Dioner Navarro. Louisville is now just 3-25 when their opponents score the first run of the game.

The Bats went in order four times in the game, including the eighth inning in which all three batters struck out looking. After Kristopher Negron was called out on strikes for the second out of the inning, Bats manager David Bell was tossed for arguing with home plate umpire David Soucy.

The Bats got their only run of the ballgame in the sixth. Negron drew a one out walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch, then swiped his 13th bag of the season to reach third. He would score when Tosoni dropped the third out of the inning at first on what should’ve been an easy groundout from Dioner Navarro.

The Bats also grounded into three double plays and were 0-for-6 with men in scoring position. They fell to 12-29 on the season, have now lost 15 of their last 18 contests and are 3-13 in the month of May.

The teams play game three of the four game series Thursday night. The Bats will send Brett Tomko (0-4, 3.55 ERA) to the mound against former Bat Daryl Thompson (1-4, 4.54 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05.
