On your next visit to Waterfront Park, walk past the water feature, duck under I-64 and stroll down the tree-lined overlook to find the Waterfront Development Corp.’s latest project — Art at Waterfront Park. The outdoor exhibition features 12 four-by-eight-foot reproductions of the city painted by local artist David Schuster. Combined, they offer a “visual synopsis” of metro Louisville by bringing together unique areas such as Churchill Downs, Prospect and Bardstown Road.
“I decided to paint a broad cross-section of Louisville and hope it gives people a new appreciation of the area — it serves as an inspiration for so much of my work,” says Schuster, a longtime muralist. The series highlights both rural and urban parts of the area and emphasizes a connection between the two.
Schuster also is excited about the unique open-air environment of Waterfront Park. “It’s just a gallery without walls,” he says. “If the project is successful this time around, we hope to make it an annual or biannual event showcasing not only the work of local artists, but from artists around Kentucky.”
Schuster’s original oil paintings and reproductions will be sold Sept. 27 during the Friends of the Waterfront benefit dinner, with proceeds going to the Louisville Waterfront Development Corp. To preview or pre-purchase, visit Schuster’s gallery at 211 S. Clay St. or call 561-2787 to make an appointment.
