Music Theatre Louisville will present its final show of the summer, Annie, beginning this Friday.
All performances of Annie will take place at the Bomhard Theater in Kentucky Center for the Arts, located at 501 West Main Street in downtown Louisville. Shows will take place on August 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, and 15 at 7 p.m. each night. Matinee performances will take place on August 7, 8, 14, and 15 at 1:30 p.m.
The two-hour event is $25 per audlt, $20 for seniors, $20 for students 11 years old through college, and $10 for children up to 10 years old. Tickets can be purchased by going to the Kentucky Center box office, the Kentucky Center website, or by calling 502-584-7777. The production focuses on Annie, an orphan during the Great Depression, who attempts to find the family that abandoned her at the orphanage in New York City. To do this, she must get past Miss Hannigan, a not-too-nice woman who runs the ophanage. Annie starts on a journey with an intended destination to find her family but winds up at a different, and possibly better, outcome.
Along the way, Annie will come in contact with people that will change her life, including Oliver Warbucks, his secretary Grace Farrell, a mutt named Sandy, and even President Roosevelt.
Thomas Meehan created the book for Annie while Charles Strouse wrote the music and Martin Charmin created the lyrics. Annie is based on the comic strip Little Orphan Annie.
Annie had two runs on Broadway, according to the Internet Broadway Database. In its first run, which lasted from 1977-1983, the musical was performed at the Alvin Theatre, ANTA Playhouse, Eugene O'Neill Theatre, and the Uris Theatre. During a revival in 1997, Annie was performed at the Martin Beck Theatre on Broadway.
Among the Music Theatre Louisville cast will be girls that participated in Camp Annie, a two-week camp that focused on choreography, acting, and music. A preview event featuring the girls will take place on August 4 at 11 a.m. at the Kentucky Center front steps.
