ANDY TINSLEY has been a part of punk rock in Louisville since 1986, playing in bands and managing hardcore heroes Endpoint. He has spent the last 12 years tour managing underground rockers like Alkaline Trio, Say Anything, The Used, Jenny Lewis, Rise Against, and Snapcase.

So what makes a man with such an impressive resume say, “I’ve never been so scared and excited for something”?

That would be the return of Krazy Fest. This weekend, Tinsley is bearing the bulk of the burden in re-introducing Louisville to the hardcore and punk festival that helped shape its music scene from 1998-2003. He’ll help usher scores of bands and thousands of fans into Expo Five for three days of attitude, camaraderie and music.

We caught up to ask him what made him Krazy enough to take on something so… Krazy….

WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO BRING KRAZY FEST BACK AFTER 8 YEARS?
Endpoint did a benefit show a year ago at Headliners… Mark Beemer from Shirts for a Cure was there and asked me “Whatever happened to Krazy Fest? You ought to bring that back.” I told him he was crazy.

    WHAT CHANGED YOUR MIND?
I love this scene so much I think I just built myself up to do it. The more the idea set in, the more appealing it got. You know…the eyes are bigger than the stomach…. (laughs)
It was such a vital festival… I really felt it was something that needed to come back.

WHAT HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE OF PUTTING THIS ALL TOGETHER?
Creating the line-up was one of the easier parts. The hardest part for me is the challenge of trying to recreate all of the personal ties everyone has to this…People have such high expectations. I don’t want to let anyone down. My biggest challenge is making sure I bring the awesomeness.

WHAT DAY ARE YOU MOST EXCITED FOR?
Monday! No… I took a lot of time creating this schedule making sure every day brought it. I want them all to kick-ass equally.

ANY YOUNG BANDS THAT YOU ARE REALLY EXCITED TO BRING TO LOUISVILLE?
I’ve been really kind of excited to see Pianos Become the Teeth… They are reminiscent of bands I used to listen to and when I heard them it struck a chord. I am going to try to put enough fires out to make sure I can pull away for 20 minutes and see their set.

Tigers Jaw – I am really excited to see them, too. I hope that it translates live like it does on the recording.

HOW WILL THE FEST BE SET UP AT EXPO FIVE?
I’m doing combination parking lot (two stages) and inside stage. I didn’t want anybody to overlap. I hate going to festivals and having to decide which bands to see. I didn’t want anybody to have to make their minds up.

WHAT DO YOU WANT TO SAY TO FOLKS COMING TO THE SHOWS?
Have an open mind to styles of music you wouldn’t necessarily listen to… You might be surprised with how much you enjoy it.
