There are fake portraits and there are good portraits. A fake portrait is normally posed in front of a fake backdrop where everyone has a plastered smile and a deer in headlights expression. A good portrait is so intimate it can reveal a persons soul. Guy Mendes takes good portraits.
40 Years 40 Portraits is an exhibition of photographic portraits from the lives of 40 people that photographer Guy Mendes has encountered over the past 40 years. This isn’t a complicated math problem, but a unique way to look at people over a period of time. Mendes has traveled from New Orleans to Kentucky to create black and white portraits of some of the South’s most interesting people.
40/40 will open with a reception on Friday, October 14 at 5 p.m. following the Documentary Photography Symposium being held at the University of Louisville, Hite Galleries, Schneider Hall. This exhibit is being held in conjunction with the Photo Biennial and will run through Nov. 13th.
