We live in a mad dash. We scurry tirelessly in an unspoken race to whatever end we face at life’s final hour. Although very few amongst us admittedly relish the idea of aging and death, we humans are hyperactively obsessed with squeezing just as much “living” as we possibly can into the little, linear stretches of time we get the pleasure of leading. But while we may face the future with the expectation of an open mind and a slightly manic desire to succeed, our clocks tick a dreaded dance towards the much-feared “middle age”. Embrace the numbers, quiet the festinating tattoo of societal stigmata and jump into an objective dialogue about middle age in cultural America as Patricia Cohen presents her new book, In Our Prime, at the Louisville Free Public Library’s Main branch tomorrow evening, Wednesday, July 18th at 7 p.m.

The first book released by New York Times reporter Patricia Cohen, In Our Prime: The Invention of Middle Age, explores the origins of “midlife” beginning with its first incarnations in the 19th century and following generations into the 21st.  Using her own journalistic background to discuss topics such as culture, education, psychology, theatre and books, Cohen dissects every facet of the American middle age, ranging from advances in experimental science, to midlife portrayals in entertainment, to the ever-shifting societal boundaries of the middle years of life.

Join Cohen tomorrow evening at the Louisville Free Public Library’s Main branch to discuss the book, and examine the numerical pinnacle of human life that both empowers and befuddles our culture. Check out a copy of In Our Prime, make your reservations and don’t be ashamed to bring those reading glasses along for the ride.

The Louisville Free Public Library’s Main branch is located at 301 York Street. This event is free, but tickets are required.

    About Erin Day

I'm a Louisville native who transplanted home from Las Vegas recently. Don't ask. In my spare time I read a lot of books and drink gin. My soulmate is my 1994 turquoise Ford Ranger - they never made a finer truck. I still totally believe in the Loch Ness Monster. I just want to write for you.
