When it came to pondering candidates to replace departing assistant coach Marvin Menzies, most observers of University of Louisville basketball would admit that the name Walter McCarty never appeared on their radar screens. However, now that McCarty, a former Kentucky hoop player and 10-year NBA veteran has joined Rick Pitino’s U of L staff, the move looks like it could be a stroke of genius.

Louisville assistant coach Marvin Menzies (left) is set to become head basketball coach at New Mexico State today, replacing former U of L assistant Reggie Theus, who has moved on to the NBA. Broadcast reports suggest former UK and NBA star Walter McCarty may replace Menzies at Louisville.

Commentary: This year will be the first time new Louisville football coach Steve Kragthorpe (pictured left) experiences the Governor's Cup clash between U of L and UK. Is it already time to admit moving the game from the season opener to the third game of the year was a mistake? If so, why wait to fix it?
