IdeaFestival at the Kentucky Center Founded in 2000, the IdeaFestival attracts leading and highly diverse thinkers from around the globe to explore and celebrate innovation, imagination and cutting-edge ideas. The IdeaFestival is a unique non-linear event designed to stretch people's horizons and promote breakthrough thinking—utilizing multiple venues to showcase, discuss and connect important ideas in science, the arts, design, business, film, technology and education. The festival appeals to a broad cross-section of people, with presenters selected for their ideas, achievements and ability to communicate to a wide-ranging audience. Sept. 19-22 Sweet Stuff Tasting Event at Dillard's Mall St. Matthews Taste Sweet Stuff creations from the Louisville area's finest bakers, confectionaries and pastry chefs—featuring confections from Sweet Shoppe Cake & Candy Supplies, Coco's Chocolate Cafe, Louisville Chocolate Fountain, Heitzman's Bakery, Ladyfingers Fine Catering and Louisville Wedding Cake. Sept. 20, 6-8:30 p.m. The Ten-Tucky Festival of Ten-Minute Plays at The Bard's Town The Bard's Town Theatre's annual celebration of Kentucky playwrights is back for a second year. This year's festival features Judging Quilts, Gay Encounters of the Third Kind, Aphrodite at the ER, Nightstalker & Canary, Sweet Virginia, Stained Glass, Finn’s Motel, and A Falling Piano with Your Name on It. Kentucky Opera Presents Tosca at the Brown Theatre Flames of passion engulf the beautiful opera singer, Floria Tosca, her lover Cavaradossi and the corrupt police chief, Baron Scarpia. To be with her true love, Tosca must sacrifice her self-respect and eventually her life. But not before having her revenge on the man who took it all away. Starring Kara Shay Thomson as Floria Tosca. Sept. 20, 8 p.m. Oktoberfest 2012 at the German-American Club Louisville's original Oktoberfest continues with entertainment by Louisville's Rheingold Band, Cincinnati's Gebhard Erler and Indianapolis' The Knappers. Authentic German food will be served. German vendors will also be selling clothing, beer steins and other items from Germany. Danger Run Miracle Weekend at select Lowes Locations The Danger Run is a haunted Halloween game that you play in your car with your friends. When you start at any of our convenient locations, you will be given a book of rhyming clues. You will work together with those in your car to solve each clue, one by one, as you find your way on dark, spooky, desolate roads to two brand new scary haunted houses. It's like a scavenger hunt, but in this case you are trying to find the haunted houses. The object is to follow the clues exactly as they were designed and accumulate the exact mileage of the course on your vehicle. This year Danger Run is teaming up with the Children's Miracle Network for a fundraiser benefiting Kosair Children's Hospital supported by the Children's Hospital Foundation. On opening weekend, September 21-22, 2012 $1 of every ticket sold will be donated to the Children's Miracle Network to benefit Kosair Children's Hospital. Sept. 21-22, 7-11 p.m.
NuLu Festival at East Market District The East Market District is pleased to announce its 4th annual NuLu Festival, featuring a crowd-chosen musical act, in addition to a day of curated live music. The free, family friendly and open-to-the-public block party, which features all things local, will offer live music, a kids’ corner, local food and retail vendors, and a generous selection of microbrews from The Louisville Beer Store. NuLu Festival is also the official after-party for Louisville’s Idea Festival. Sept. 22, 2-11 p.m. 2012 Kentuckiana Heart Walk at Waterfront Park A one-and three-mile walk to raise funds for the American Heart Association as we fund research, education and advocacy for heart disease and stroke-our community's number one and four killers. Sept. 22, 8-11 a.m. Carrie Underwood at the KFC Yum! Center The Grammy award winner burst onto the scene in 2005 on the popular TV series, American Idol, and has gone on to become one of the most recognizable names in country music with 11 No. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 Charts including “Wasted,” “Before He Cheats” and “Jesus, Take the Wheel.” Underwood has been recognized in almost every outlet of the entertainment world including the American Music Awards, the Golden Globes, and the Academy of Country Music, as well as being named the Country Music Association’s female vocalist of the year, and a two-time ACM Entertainer of the Year. A Cabaret…Witches' Night Out & Live Auction at the Rudyard Kipling The cast and crew of Wicked will be hosting an evening of cabaret, food, drink and a live auction all benefiting Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS and the Louisville AIDS Walk. SteraFlims and the some of the crew also also be participating in the Louisville AIDS Walk. This is a chance to meet and greet some of the cast, and there will also be a guest appearance by Louisville's Gunnar Deatherage from Project Runway. Sept. 23, 9 p.m. Final Viewing Day at the Speed Art Museum The Speed opens its doors to the public for a final day of viewing. Visitors can learn about the future of the new museum in the exhibitions Unveiling the New Speed: A Model of the Future and preview the new Art Park in Inside|Out. Also on view will be the Speed’s recently acquired Kentucky Sideboard in A Kentucky Masterpiece Unveiled! and Souvenirs of Europe: An Early Kentucky Artist Collects. Families will be invited to play and create in Art Sparks interactive gallery one last time before expansion begins. Sept. 23, 12-5 p.m. McAlpine Locks Lunch/Sightseeing Cruise on the Belle of Louisville There's just something about going through a river lock on an historic steamboat. Whether you choose to include the lunch buffet or come just for sightseeing (no buffet), it will be a memorable trip. A narrator will be on board to help you know more about the lock process, and a live bluegrass band will provide musical entertainment as well. Please remember, return times are not guaranteed, and river conditions will dictate where we go on the cruise. Advance reservations are required for the buffet. Sept. 23, 12:30-4 p.m.
