Guided tour of 20th century African American collections at the Flison This exhibit focuses on African American history in Kentucky and the Ohio Valley as well as the Civil Rights movement in the region. Photos, artwork, manuscripts, ephemera, and artifacts are among the items this exhibit features. Staff members will guide visitors through the exhibit, offering background information on these important items and the history behind these movements. Reservations required. May 31, 12 p.m. Sister Monica Wells book signing at Carmichael's Carmichael's will host a special event with Sister Monica Weis for a book signing and discussion of her new book The Environmental Vision of Thomas Merton Weis suggests that Merton's interest in nature, which developed significantly during his years at the Abbey of Gethsemani, laid the foundation for his growing environmental consciousness. Grassroot Gala on South Fourth Street The Grassroots Gala is the authentic celebration of all Louisville neighborhoods, providing them the opportunity to showcase their individual character and unique assets while celebrating our local partners. Booths and activities featured at The Grassroots Gala include neighborhood and local partner booths; a Keep Louisville Weird raffle; musical performances by Down By The Wayside Choir, John Gage, The Twisted Sister Family Band, The Muddy Walters and King Kong; June 1, 4 p.m. Opening reception, Our House: Recent Works in Glass by Joel O'Dorisio at the Carnegie Center Enjoy refreshments and music by the Jamey Aebersold Jazz Quartet at the opening reception for Our House: Recent Works in Glass by Joel O'Dorisio. Through the art in this exhibit, glass artist O’Dorisio explores the relationship between his fascination with the inherent wonder of the natural landscape and the contrived beauty of the city. To achieve a balance between these disparate elements, O’Dorisio creates molds of the bark from different types of trees that he then incorporates into cast glass sculptures. June 1, 6 p.m. Germantown-Schnitzelburg Blues Festival lThree blues bands are playing both days of the third annual Germantown-Schnitzelburg Blues Festival, held in memory of the late John Carby (a portion of the proceeds will go to the American Cancer Society). The festival is located near the corner of Burnett Avenue and Hickory Street in the Germantown-Schnitzelburg neighborhood. Bring a lawn chair and enjoy the show. June 1-2, 6 p.m.-12 a.m.
22nd Annual Americana World Festival at the American Community Center Community members from all over Metro Louisville will attend Americana World Festival to enjoy the sights, sounds and tastes of our city's diversity. Exciting entertainment will span the whole day, with performers as varied as local band Mercy Academy to a traditional Burundian drumming ensemble. Food vendors onsite will include ValuMarket, local favorite Taco Punk, Churreria Rabbit, and other multicultural food offerings. Other features of Americana World Festival include a KidsZone, community resources and goods from local vendors and exhibitors, a soccer tournament, and a raffle. June 2, 11 a.m.–9 p.m. The Kinfolks Soul Food Music Festival at Waterfront Park The Soul Food Festival is an inviting event that highlights the aroma of traditional soul food cooking in the air while bringing together families and friends in an outdoor social setting for a day of reunion, fellowship and live national award winning entertainment. Proceeds from the Soul Food Festival benefit learning environments with particular focus on under-privileged youth and young adults. June 2, 6 p.m. More Than a Word photo contest finalists on display at the Ali Center The Muhammad Ali Center is proud to announce its first annual More than a Word photography contest. This year’s theme is dedication, inspired by this summer’s Olympic Games in London, and Muhammad Ali’s life and legacy. Images selected as finalists are now on display at the Ali Center. Louisville Chorus presents "Tony Award Winners" feat. the Beargrass Christian Church Choir The Beargrass Christian Church Choir will join the Louisville Chorus in this performance of Broadway at its best. June 3, 4 p.m. "This Is Not A Pipe Dream" at the Alley Theater Based freely on the work and early life of surrealist artist Rene Magritte, this unorthodox adventure in theatrical form celebrates art, imagination and the ways in which they help us confront life's mysteries. This play s the story of young Rene who wants to be an artist, a notion dismissed by his father as a pipe dream. Encouraged by his mother, before her untimely death, the boy begins his quest, following his vision into the delightfully absurd magic-realism of his famous paintings. Boy and audience discover something of the true power of dreams and the triumph of imagination. Through June 3 Friends of the Library Book Sale at the South Louisville Community Center Feed your need to read: Friends of the Louisville Free Public Library present the spring book sale. Friday is preview night for members only. Adult hardbacks are $2, paperbacks and children's books are $1; oversized paperbacks are $1; audio, video, and books-on-tape $2.
