'The Full Monty' at the Jewish Community Center Seeing how much their wives enjoy watching male strippers during their girls’ night out, unemployed steelworkers in Buffalo, N.Y. come up with a bold way to make some quick cash. In the process they find renewed self-esteem, the importance of friendship and the ability to have fun. Though May 20 Coffee and Conversation: Human Rights and Land Rights in Colombia at Java Brewing Company For the next Coffee & Conversation event, the Java Brewing Company will be hosting a U.S. State Department-sponsored group from Colombia that's traveling the United States discussing human rights and land rights. The delegation is part of a single-country project for Colombia and is made up of individuals whose professions involve human rights and land rights/tenure. This social event in a relaxed setting will give you the chance to get to know some of the interesting visitors who pass through Louisville via World Affairs Council programs. Coffee and a light snack will be provided to attendees. May 17, 6 p.m. 'The Snowflake Theory' at The Bard's Town Jewish widow Marge is ready to re-invent herself, but when both her son and daughter arrive and have something to say, chaos ensues. Lecture with artist Ryan McGinness at 21c Museum Hotel New York-based artist Ryan McGinness grew up in Virginia Beach, Va., and studied at Carnegie Mellon University as an Andrew Carnegie Scholar. McGinness creates paintings, sculpture and environments marked by his distinctive use of the visual language of public signage, commercial logos and contemporary iconography. Interested in the perceived value of forms, McGinness employs the power of the anonymous aesthetic to communicate personal expressions. His work is in numerous public collections, including New York City's Museum of Modern Art and Metropolitan Museum of Art. May 18, 6:30 p.m. Paddock Concert Series at Churchill Downs An expert at blending musical genres, Citizen Cope, tells stories with music while incorporating hip-hop beats, quiet piano melodies, blues and a hint of pop. Admission gates will open at 1:30 p.m. and the first race will be 2:45 p.m. Happy Hour drink specials include $3 Stella Draft Beer from 4-7 p.m. in the paddock area. The featured performance is expected around 8 p.m. and each post-race concert will last approximately 90 minutes. The first 850 people in attendance for the concert will be allowed access into the saddling paddock to watch the concert up close in a VIP Watch Area free of charge. May 18, 1:30–9:45 p.m. The Alley Theater presents 'This is Not a Pipe Dream' Based freely on the work and early life of surrealist artist Rene Magritte, this unorthodox adventure in theatrical form celebrates art and the imagination. This is Not a Pipe Dream is the story of young Rene who wants to be an artist, a notion dismissed by his father as "a pipe dream." Encouraged by his mother, before her untimely death, the boy begins his quest, following his vision into the delightfully absurd magic-realism of his famous paintings. Boy and audience discover something of the true power of dreams and the triumph of imagination. May 18–June 3
Muddy Fanatic The most exhilarating day of your life has arrived. This 5K adventure race is filled with mud, water, fire and obstacles like you have never seen before. The exhilaration continues after the race with live music, food, and beer (for those 21 and older). The festival will be a day-long Parisian-style flea market that celebrates Old Louisville’s love of history, culture, diversity, food and style.
