'Lincoln's Forgotten Ally: Judge Advocate General Joseph Holt of Kentucky' book discussion at the Filson Historical Society Joseph Holt, the stern, brilliant and deeply Unionist from Kentucky spent the first several months of the American Civil War successfully laboring to maintain Kentucky’s loyalty to the Union. He then went on to serve as President Lincoln’s judge advocate general. In Lincoln’s Forgotten Ally: Judge Advocate General Joseph Holt of Kentucky, Elizabeth Leonard offers the first full-scale biography of Holt, who has long been overlooked and misunderstood by historians and students of the war. The book seeks to restore Holt, who dedicated both his energy and his influence to ensuring that the Federal victory would bring about lasting positive change for the nation, to his rightful place in American memory. Herb Workshop at the Yew Dell Botanical Gardens For the cooking gardener (as most of us are at Yew Dell!) there’s just nothing like going out to the garden, picking a handful of fresh herbs and bringing them back to the kitchen where they work their magic. June 16, 10:30 a.m.–12 p.m. Rites of passage: A celebration of Louisville Artists Do you ever wonder who created those works of art that adorn the River City’s streets, parks, galleries, and homes? Well, here’s your chance to meet the artists up close and personal. Figurative and portrait artist Sharon Matisoff recently embarked on a personal journey to paint artists of national and international acclaim who live and work in Louisville. Through Sept. 6 Downs After Dark at Churchill Downs The biggest summer parties in Louisville return in earnest to Churchill Downs as the home of the Kentucky Derby welcomes back its wildly-popular nighttime racing series, “Downs After Dark” Presented by Stella Artois and Finlandia Vodka. Saturday’s 11-race program includes a graded stakes tripleheader, and the June 16 program will feature four graded stakes races cumulatively worth $750,000, topped by the Grade I, $400,000 Stephen Foster Handicap. The June 30 finale will showcase rising 2-year-old stars in the Grade III, $100,000 Bashford Manor. Saturday night’s season premiere will showcase the return of the popular VJ 2nd Nature (8:30 p.m. to midnight) and Cincinnati-based cover band Off The Hook (4-8:30 p.m.). Admission gates will open at 4 p.m. and the first of 11 live races will begin at 6 p.m. (all times Eastern). The final race will be after 11 p.m. and the on-track party will continue in the paddock until midnight. June 16, 5 p.m.

Set to an engaging cornucopia of musical styles, from country-western and calypso to bubble-gum pop and rock ‘n’ roll, this Old Testament tale emerges both timely and timeless. Through June 17 Drum Corps International at Papa Johns Cardinal Stadium DCI Louisville returns to the Drum Corps International Tour schedule in 2012 as part of the very first weekend of competition in June. A lineup of top World Class corps including the 2011 DCI World Champion Cadets will march into Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium at the University of Louisville for this always-exciting event.
