Feb. 24–26 Matt Nathanson An impressive 12-string guitar player and songwriter, San Francisco's Matt Nathanson has built up a loyal fan base through extensive touring. His live shows are stripped-down affairs, usually with just Nathanson and cellist Matt Fish on-stage, and are half music, half standup comedy, with the humor balancing out the frequently despondent introspection of the songs. Nathanson's songs have also been featured on several television shows, including Dawson's Creek, Smallville, and Road Rules. Feb. 24, 8 p.m.
2012 Louisville Polar Plunge The Polar Plunge is one of the biggest Special Olympics fundraisers of the year. The Plunge is a truly unique event and includes a fun, festive atmosphere with food and great prizes. The Plunge works just like a Walk-a-Thon, but with one big twist. Participants still solicit donations to support their effort (a, um, bear minimum of $75 to take part or $50 for Junior Plungers), but instead of walking, Polar Bears take a chilly dip into the Ohio River at Tumbleweed on the Waterfront. Last year, the Polar Plunge raised $357,000 to support the efforts of Special Olympics Kentucky athletes. Feb. 25, 9:30 a.m.–12 p.m. Art Sparks Family Studio: Impressionism The museum's current exhibition Renoir to Chagall: Paris and the Allure of Color showcases Impressionism at its most vibrant. 'From No Town to Motown' Louisville Central Community Centers, Inc. (LCCC) and Grand Lyric Theatre Productions present an entertaining celebration of international acclaimed African-American music. This fundraising event supports LCCC's Kids Art Academy, a youth development program with a focus in arts education that serves over 200 school-age youth annually. The show will be headlined by Darryl Van Leer’s “Rubycat Lawson’s Roadhouse Lounge,” a foot-stomping musical tale about the owner of a once famous Blues and Rocking Roll juke joint. In addition, there will be a special guest appearance by Kevin Powell, nationally renowned activist, speaker and entrepreneur. To close the evening LCCC’s Kids Art Academy youth will perform a medley of songs in honor of black music in America under the direction of Gregory Rahming, an international opera singer and star of Broadway. Feb. 26, 5 p.m. The Kentucky Center and Live Nation present Lewis Black: 'In God We Rust' Lewis Black—stand-up comedian, actor and author—is one of the most prolific and popular performers working today. Not one to rest on his laurels, Black continues to hone his craft by performing in front of live audiences 200 nights a year in venues such as Carnegie Hall and the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. A passionate performer who is more of a pissed-off optimist than a mean-spirited curmudgeon, Lewis Black is that rare comic who can cause an audience to laugh themselves into incontinence while making compelling points about the absurdity of our world. Feb. 26, 7 p.m. 'The Veri**zon Play' at Actors' Theatre When Jenni called customer service, all she wanted was to fix a minor problem with her cell phone bill. Instead she was sucked into a vortex of unimaginable horror. Now she wants revenge—or to get her cell phone service turned back on. Part thriller, part screwball comedy, part inspired by events that have undoubtedly happened to you. It's part of the 36th annual Humana Festival of New American Plays. Feb. 26–March 1 | ||||
