Ann Hamilton at the Speed Art Museum Ann Hamilton is a visual artist internationally recognized for the sensory surrounds of her large-scale multimedia installations. Noted for a dense accumulation of materials, her liminal environments create immersive experiences that poetically respond to the architectural presence and social history of their sites. April 5, 6 p.m. Finnigan's fifth Festival of Funky Fresh Fun at the Bard's Town Finnigan Productions presents its fifth annual festival of new 10-minute plays by local playwrights, Finnigan’s Festival of Funky Fresh Fun is a celebration of local theatre artists in the disciplines of playwriting, acting and directing, with scripts from 11 local writers, directed by 11 local directors and performed by 15 local actors. The plays were written and conceived by adults for adults and due to adult language and situations, it is not recommended for anyone under the age of 18. Through April 14 Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus: Dragons at the KFC Yum! Center For the first time in circus history, myth and majesty will share the arena during this must-see family event that can only be witnessed at The Greatest Show On Earth. Dragon tribes from the far reaches of the Earth are brought together in a single performance, displaying their breathtaking skills in a circus tournament of champions. Each tribe must prove that they have virtues of Courage, Strength, Wisdom and Heart to arouse dragons which appear right before your very eyes. Through April 8
Louisville Magazine's April Derby Launch Party featuring Idol's Haley Reinhart at Ice House Join Louisville Magazine (its publisher = our owner) for its April Derby issue launch party at the Ice House (226 E. Washington St.) on Friday, April 6 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. American Idol finalist Haley Reinhart and Indiana's newest superstar Jon McLaughlin will be performing live. Guests will enjoy free appetizers and drink specials provided by Crushed Ice Events. Also, enter to win two tickets to the Marriott Oaks Bourbon Brunch, featuring celebrity chef Guy Fieri. There'll also be a Derby Hat Contest with prizes for the most spectacular and funniest Derby hat. As always, the launch party is free and open to the public. March 6, 5:30 -7:30 p.m. First Friday Variety Show at Second and Main As part of the First Friday Trolley Hop on Main Street, Baron's Theater and Smerlin Entertainment bring in a a variety show that includes magic, music and comedy, an incomparable cocktail bar and an exhibit of local art. The magician, Big Daddy Cool, comes to us from Nashville Tennessee. Comedian, Adam White, is well known here in Louisville, where he hosts Comedy Underground. Singer, Miss Kitty Taylor, comes to us from Louisville's own Va Va Vixens. The shows begin at 7:30 p.m., 8:15p.m. and 9 p.m. Cocktails and Art Showing run 5:30-10 p.m. April 6, 5:30 p.m. Kentucky Derby Festival Basketball Classic at Freedom Hall The Derby Festival Basketball Classic has showcased some of the nation's finest high school talent before the players move onto to collegiate and professional levels. Players such as Jamal Mashburn, Moses Malone, Rex Chapman, Pervis Ellison, Isiah Thomas, Dominique Wilkins, Darrell Griffith, Derek Anderson, Anfernee Hardaway and Michael Beasley have starred in the Classic. March 6, 7 p.m.
20th Annual Frankfort Avenue Easter Parade The parade includes antique cars, marching bands, dance teams, horse-drawn carriages, neighborhood groups and businesses, Shriner cars, floats, Hwang’s Martial artists, plenty of families costumed for the event, dogs with rabbit ears, children with Easter bonnets and baskets, and plenty of free candy. The Frankfort Avenue Business Association will give out Good Ears awards for the most creative floats and outrageous Easter Bonnets. The judging stand will be located in front of the Irish Rover. Those who wish to be considered for one of the awards will be asked to stop in front of the judges and show off their Easter style. Nowhere was this division more apparent than in the border state of Kentucky— where family lines were often the battle lines. The Frazier History Museum is hosting an original exhibition, Civil War: My Brother, My Enemy, in conjunction with the 150th anniversary of the American Civil War. Through April 8 Renoir to Chagall: The Allure of Color at the Speed Art Museum This major exhibition features paintings by the great French Impressionist and Post-Impressionist masters and related artists dating from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Among the who’s who of artists included are Edgar Degas, Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Camille Pissarro, Alfred Sisley, Mary Cassatt, Henri Matisse, Paul Gauguin, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Georges Braque, and Marc Chagall.
