Jason Howard at Carmichael's Bookstore Carmichael's welcomes author Jason Howard for a signing of his new book "A Few Honest Words : The Kentucky Roots of Popular Music," which explores how Kentucky’s landscape, culture, and traditions have influenced notable contemporary musicians. Featuring intimate interviews with household names (Naomi Judd, Joan Osborne, and Dwight Yoakam), emerging artists, and local musicians, Jason Howard’s rich and detailed profiles reveal the importance of the state and the Appalachian region to the creation and performance of music in America. Oct. 25, 7:30 p.m. Nick Griffin at The Improv Nick Griffin brings his personal and powerful brand of comedy to The Improv. Griffin has made multiple appearances on The Late Show with David Letterman, The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson and the Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn and had his own half-hour special on Comedy Central. TruckTober Fest at Iroquois Park TruckTober Fest features a variety of food trucks, a Friday night Costume Contest and Friday night safe trick or treating for kids at the food trucks. Saturday festivities include a Battle of the Bands by hellawicked Productions in addition to the food trucks. A percentage of food sales will be donated to the Metro Parks Foundation. Oct. 26-27, 5 p.m. Dirty Rotten Sons of Witches at The Bard's Town The comedy troupe Damaged Goods presents its 120-minute improv set along with some sketch comedy, delicious food, and its first-ever Best Costume Contest. Oct. 26, 7:30 p.m. Flea Market at the Kentucky Exposition Center The Kentucky Flea Market boasts over 700 booths of jewelry, crafts, candles, overstock, grocery items, antiques, collectibles, furniture, and more. Cinderella's Tea at the Brown Theatre The Kentucky Opera presents an afternoon tea for children 5-12 who can have their picture taken on the Cinderella set with the Prince Charming. Oct. 27, 11:30 a.m. Monster Crash 2: The Haunted Prom at Nachand Fieldhouse This year's Monster Crash is a Halloween costume party complete with music by The Crashers. This is a 21+ event. Oct. 27, 8 p.m. Joe Riggs at The Henry Clay Mentalist, consultant & author Joe Riggs known worldwide as "The Real Sherlock Holmes" will be mixing together his unique brand of Mentalism & Deduction to give the audience an evening they will never forget. Riggs explains the core principals behind his methods so that the audience walks away not only astonished, but educated at the same time. Oct. 27, 6:30 p.m.
Fall Meet Opening Day at Churchill Downs Opening Day of the 2012 Fall Meet is highlighted by the Stars of Tomorrow I race program which is a day dedicated two-year-old racing. There will be two stakes races on the card including the $150,000 Pocahontas (GII) and the $100,000 Iroquois (GIII). Oct. 28, 11:30 a.m. Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk at Waterfront Park The American Cancer Society presents its 15th annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer 5K walk. This even unites the community to honor and celebrate breast cancer survivors, educate women about the importance of early detection and prevention, and raise money for research and support programs. Oct. 28, 11:30 a.m. Boonanza at Louisville Science Center Back by popular demand, it's the Halloween celebration full of science tricks and treats! In addition to learning all about glow-in-the-dark geysers and ultraviolet minerals, explore how a zombie virus would affect our bodies and examine "zombie" organs up-close.
