Among the most important artists to emerge from Northern Ireland, Willie Doherty creates photographs and videos that explore layered narratives embodied in the landscape. In his work, singular in its distillation of politics, the psychology of fear and oppression, and formal beauty, places, people and situations depicted are both specific and profoundly universal. The Speed Art Museum’s exhibition will include two single-channel video installations -- Ghost Story (first shown in 2007 at the 52nd Venice Biennale) and Buried (commissioned for Fruitmarket Gallery, Edinburgh in 2009) - and eleven large-scale photographs of the borders between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland the artist made in the 1990s.

Film Series
The Speed presents a film series co-curated by Ryan Daly and Willie Doherty titled, Cinematic Remembrance: Memory and Movies. This ongoing program of classic cinema, documentary, avant-garde and Hollywood spectacle explores the nature of memory and its representation in cinema. Museum Publication
In conjunction with Willie Doherty: Traces, the Speed Art Museum has published an insightful and beautifully designed publication of the same name, available in October 2011. This catalogue includes a foreword by Speed Director and CEO, Dr. Charles L. Venable, an essay on landscapes as a major theme in the work by Speed Curator of Contemporary Art, Suzanne Weaver, and a conversation with Ryan Daly Executive Director of the Louisville Film Society, Doherty, and Weaver that enriches our understanding of the artist’s ideas, processes, and innovative practice.
