Provided by the Louisville Asset Building Coalition (LABC), the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program generally offers free tax help to people who make $52,000 or less and need assistance in preparing their own tax returns. IRS-certified volunteers provide free basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals in local communities. They can inform taxpayers about special tax credits for which they may qualify such as Earned Income Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit, and Credit for the Elderly or the Disabled.

LABC is the largest local preparer and tax services provider in Kentucky, serving approximately 15% of the market for families eligible for VITA within its service area. LABC has experienced tremendous growth in its free tax services over the past decade, from filing 635 returns in its first year of operation to filing 11,378 returns in the 2012 tax season. In its 12 years of service, LABC has provided free tax preparation assistance to over 85,000 filers, returning over $82 million in total refunds.
