The 40th Anniversary of UCHM: A Time to Celebrate

It has been 40 years since the Tornado of April 3, 1974 hit the Crescent Hill, Clifton, and Clifton Heights neighborhoods, creating devastation in these communities.
What the tornado tore down, 19 neighborhood churches quickly began to rebuild in a joint effort to meet the needs of neighbors without power, food or homes.

This collaboration became United Crescent Hill Ministries, a non-profit organization dedicated to serving the communities of the 40206 zip code. Forty years later, United Crescent Hill Ministries’ 21 member churches and neighborhood partners continue to assist families, seniors and youth.

In the aftermath of the Tornado, it became obvious to church members and pastors that there were needs still to be met, both immediate and ongoing. Forty years later, United Crescent Hill Ministries continues to meet the needs of our Community with the faithful help of our 21 member churches and neighborhood partners.

On Sunday, April 6th UCHM celebrates 40 years of community service. We will reminisce about where we all were in 1974, celebrate 40 years of service to our community, and look ahead to an exciting future. A light lunch will be served thanks to the Lion’s Club. A short program starting at 1:15 pm will include community leaders Councilwoman Tina Ward-Pugh, Crescent Hill resident and historian Allan Steinberg and president of Association of Community Ministries, Ron Loughry. Former Louisville Mayor, Dr. Harvey Sloane, will be back in town from Washington, DC for the Crescent Hill tornado anniversary event. Performers of Second Chance will provide live entertainment and there will be a tornado photo exhibit from Crescent Hill Community Council.
