Rock 'n Roll Tex-icana, Country, Folk
With influences as wide as the Americana genre itself, UNION SPECIFIC's work is largely a collision of three influences: the reckless abandon of the early days of Rock and Roll (The Supremes, The Beach Boys), the roots and soul of some of the early progressives (The Band, Neil young, Graham Parsons) and the thoughtfulness of indie sup pop contemporaries (Elliott Smith, Jeff Tweedy) . The band has managed to mold this into cohesive live sound that is fast paced and energetic yet thoughtful, complete with three part harmonies. From an off chance meeting in Sherman, TX in 2008, to their current tour with album #2, Union Specific has played more than 200 shows in the past year alone. Their now iconic Ford Expedition, christened “The Union Special”, has logged hundreds of thousands of miles, as the band has toured nationally across the greater Midwest and east coast regions, not to mention the countless drives across the great state of Texas to play shows, and parties, in the big cities, and small towns that speckle the terrain like so many tiny dots on that handy GPS. Listen to the lyrics behind the steel guitar heavy, harmony droning, Gram Parsonsy, rock and roll...rootsy at times but with 'more dirt on it', their sound packs a big punch. To give credence to how hard they work, the group has adopted the slogan, "Building Americana", a play on the Union Pacific railroad's slogan. The band's hard work has paid off for them, especially considering their relatively short existence.
